Our Programs
|
What began to the Rev. David Bulkley in 1924 as a “terrible compulsion from God” to move his family to Kansas City’s northeast side to open a gospel mission for “those poor lost souls,” has grown to one of our area’s largest, most comprehensive emergency shelter and long-term recovery programs.
Each year, City Union Mission provides a place to stay, meals, medical assistance, recovery and re-entry counseling, community assistance, transitional living apartments, outreach, holiday feasts and youth programs to men, women and children.
Last year, City Union Mission served 291,650 meals and provided 127,476 nights of emergency and long-term shelter to men, women and families. Ninety percent of our guests come from greater Kansas City. The remaining 10% are guests who find themselves in this area from as far away as Maine to California, Peru, Nigeria, Korea and Russia.
Rescue and Shelter
City Union Mission offers immediate comfort and shelter for men, women and children who are homeless, hungry and often exhausted. Our Men’s Shelter houses up to 150 men, giving them support until they are able to find employment and save enough to afford more permanent housing. Men and women with families stay at our Women and Families Shelter for up to two months as they work to get stable housing.
The shelters offer three meals a day, showers, clean clothing, access to emergency assistance, medical care, social services and case management, and a way to communicate with friends and relatives. The Mission’s Hotline for the Homeless is a regional, collaborative phone bank that monitors openings and helps place men, women and families at 11 area homeless shelters. The Hotline also provides information and referral to a myriad of social and emergency services.
Long-term Recovery
For those seeking lasting change, City Union Mission offers long-term recovery programs. The Christian Life Program, New Life Program and Opportunity Farm in Warsaw, Missouri, provide addiction recovery, work therapy, counseling, adult education and GED classes. During the 12 to 14-month residential program, clients learn life skills and job readiness and participate in numerous support groups.
Outreach
City Union Mission reaches out to help prevent and break the cycle of poverty and homelessness with programs focused on low-income individuals and families in and around Kansas City. Community Assistance provides groceries, clothing, school and household supplies, utility and rent assistance, case management, service to shut- ins, job readiness, career exploration classes and Bible study. Holiday Ministries provides on-site feasts at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and food baskets and gifts to more than 2,465 poverty-stricken men, women and children.

Up to 500 low-income children ages 4-16 attend free week-long summer camps at Camp CUMCITO in the Missouri Ozarks. The Vanderberg Youth Center provides after-school and summer programs to more than 250 children ages 7-17.
