Five Ways to Maximize Your Gift Planning

What pulls your heartstrings? Urban kids getting a chance to spend a week at camp? Homeless people being fed, sheltered and given new hope? City Union Mission has established five unique funds that allow you to designate your gifts to those areas that most touch your heart, ensuring the Mission has the resources it needs to help the poor and homeless long into the future.
The Vanderberg Ministry Foundation is an endowment that will carry on the ministry to Kansas City’s poor and homeless by allowing City Union Mission to launch or expand their ministries, and support costs that would not be covered by the general fund.
The Capital Legacy Foundation will address special capital projects aimed at expanding and improving City Union Mission’s shelters and programs.
The Staff Education and Advancement Fund will allow us to meet training goals and employment needs of the future.
The Children’s Scholarship Fund helps meet the needs of poor and homeless children by sending them to Camp CUMCITO.
The Christian Life Scholarship Fund will help provide scholarship assistance for CLP and NLP graduates who wish to attend Bible college.
Discover how to leave a legacy for the Mission through our new foundations without reducing your regular gifts. Please contact Director of Development Dennis Chapman at (816) 474-9380, ext. 1476, or e-mail Dennisc@cumission.org.

We're Green!

City Union Mission's new Christian Life Center, a 26,000 square foot facility, was completed June, 2008 at the cost of $6.7 million. "The new facility is all paid for thanks to our generous donors. Because this building has the capacity for 100 men, double what we were able to accomodate in the past we'll be able to help restore more men's lives. And the "green" aspect of the building reflects that committment to restoration," said Dan Doty, Executive Director.

Rain falls in the urban environment onto mostly impervious surfaces, such as, building roofs, parking lots, streets and sidewalks and is historically collected, channelized and diverted into piped stormwater systems that are very costly and not environmentally friendly. The stormwater then disappears underground into a series of pipes and it emerges at great velocities offsite, often to the great detriment of the local creeks, streams and rivers downstream.

The City Union Mission project decided to change the ways of how they treated stormwater runoff. They decided to make a concerted effort to treat each drop of water as a precious resource and showcase a sustainable stormwater approach that quickly became the primary showcase for the exterior spaces.
The specific system for the City Union Mission collects stormwater from the roof drains and deposits that volume into a series of inter-connected Rain Gardens that fill up entirely during typical storm events and get absorbed into the ground through the plantings.
The Rain Gardens capture a majority of the polluted runoff and cleanse it through the various native planting zones. Once this process has taken place the stormwater will percolate back into the sub surface soils or it will overflow into the other Rain Gardens and will be introduced into conventional stormwater infrastructure as clean water.
The plantings are what make this system thrive and the Native or Xeric plants are well-suited for the climate of Kansas City and require less watering and maintenance. They thrive in the extreme wet/dry conditions that occur within a Rain Garden.

God's Love Comes Through!

What makes Camp CUMCITO (City Union Mission’s Camp in the Ozarks) a life-changing experience for inner-city and impoverished kids? The safety and security of our quiet, rural campground? Fishing and roasting marshmallows for the first time? Singing worship songs?
"It’s the time, and it’s the love - God’s love - coming through the counselors," Alana Young answers. "The kids know when someone really, truly cares about them and these counselors really do care."
Alana, who will be a sophomore at the University of Missouri this fall, started attending camp when she was 14. Younger brothers AJ, Aaron and Alex have been to camp, too.
Growing up in the inner-city, these siblings understand the challenges many of our campers face. But they consider themselves blessed. They have a mother and father who love them, care for their needs and equip them with God’s Word. For them, a week at camp served to strengthen their walks with the Lord.
"We dove deeper into the Bible and talked a lot about issues kids encounter these days," Aaron, 17, says. "Camp made me more strong and courageous for God. It made it easier for me to minister to kids back at school; I didn’t feel weird because I was talking about God."
Both Alana and Aaron now return to camp as counselors and staff to be examples for other inner-city kids.
"As a counselor, you know you are planting a seed to someone learning and knowing about God," Alana shares. "His love through me may impact their outlooks on life. They may not remember my name, but they’ll remember the love."
"At camp, the kids can let all their burdens go: dad not being home, mom hitting them," Aaron adds. "They get away from whatever they are going through. Here, kids grow relationships and get a sense of love and family."

I’m gonna soar like an eagle, fly like a bird.
Totally set free by the pow’r of His Word.

Connecting with You

From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
The absolute most exciting thing at Camp CUMCITO (City Union Mission Camp In The Ozarks) is when kids make a serious decision to be Sold Out and Radical for Jesus Christ! That’s what we pray for and that’s what we prepare for each summer.
Camp is such a fun and encouraging place - it’s hard to imagine what many of these kids experience at home and in school. Too often, we hear local news reports of abuse towards children, from neglect to the unthinkable.

Dan Doty shares a moment with a young girl as she waits to load the bus for camp.

My home (and probably yours, too) was a wonderfully safe place. It wasn’t necessary for me to go to a camp to experience love, care, honesty and uplifting communication. I received that at home - where I should have!
I truly wish I could tell you every child attending Camp CUMCITO is a happy, well-cared for, well-adjusted and loved individual - but that isn’t true. Many are, of course. They’re blessed to come from caring and loving homes. But, not all. So our camp staff prays and works hard to make each week a concentrated time of demonstrating God’s intimate love for each and every child.
Will you help these children SOAR by sponsoring a day or even a week at camp? This is a great opportunity to help impact a child (or several) for life on earth and forevermore.
For His Glory,

Rev. Daniel J. Doty
Executive Director

The Lights Are On

What began as a dream has become a reality. City Union Mission’s new Christian Life Program (CLP) building opened March 21, across from our Men’s Center. This facility provides the opportunity for long-term, Christ-centered recovery for up to 100 homeless or addicted men.
We are thankful to so many of you for your faithful and sacrificial donations to our Building the Walls that Rebuild Lives Capital Campaign that funded this expansion project. We pledge to continue to reshape, renew and rebuild men’s lives through education, counseling, job training and addiction recovery - all rooted in God’s Word.
In the next issue of The Light, we’ll take you on a tour of our beautiful CLP facility and introduce you to some of the men who are finding hope and new lives inside its walls.

Sold Out and Radical for the Lord!

This summer, up to 500 homeless and low-income campers will travel to Camp CUMCITO, nestled in the Ozark Mountains near Warsaw, Missouri. This week spent swimming, fishing, singing and learning about Jesus may change their lives forever!

The more I talk to Jesus, the more He lets me know. To be sold out to Him is the only way to go.

Craft Time is a Favorite of Campers

"The emphasis at camp is on walking with Christ and living an example for the kids," says Ron English, who has spent four years as volunteer craft director and lifeguard at teen boys camp.

Craft time is a favorite of campers.

So many [of the boys] come from homes where there are no boundaries. We try to instill rules and regulations that teach the boys. We pray before class. You never know what effect you might have on one person's life."
The children come from all different backgrounds - with unique personal and familial issues - so they learn from each other, too.
Ron remembers a camper who was mentally challenged and teased by some of the other boys during a sporting game. Yet, despite the teasing, when the game was over, this young man shook hands with the other boys, congratulating them on their victory. "His good sportsmanship really impressed the boys who were making fun of him!"
Ron and other members of Fellowship Baptist Church are faithful volunteers in our camp program. "Every once in a while you are challenged with these boys," Ron continues. "But I love coming back and spending time with them. This is such a great ministry."

It is More than Going to Church

"The biggest person who changed from camp was me," laughs John Carter, volunteer camp counselor from Sharon Baptist Church. "I learned that being a Christian and following Jesus is a lot more than going to church and not doing the wrong things."

John takes his turn at the dunk tank during our end-of-week carnival.

Never married and 33 years old, John was scared to death of 9- and 10-year-olds. "But those kids got to my heart," he says.
One of John’s cabin mates came with a big chip on his shoulder. His dad wasn’t around and he lived with his mom in a rundown home. Another couldn’t read and didn’t have enough clothes for the week. The boys’ rough home lives were quickly apparent to John.
After a couple days at camp though, their demeanors began to change and they started opening up. As many campers do, one of the boys in John’s cabin made a decision for Christ.
The kids gather around and want to play with you because you are a male and you want to have something to do with them," John says. "They see that a man can be responsible and can care for kids. They get a break from their lives."

When you sponsor a child at camp, you are making an investment with eternal rewards! Thank you for helping us love and care for kids who need us most.

Thank you for paying for everything. I am having a great time. I am going to come every year. I've been here since I was 3 - quite a while, huh! I love this whole camp.
Sincerely,
Sierra

Thank you for giving money so I can come to camp. Thank you soooo ... much. My favorite part of camp is the lake trampoline.

One Camper's Love Lives On

"It was under this big tree that I learned about Jesus and received Him as my Savior my first year at camp," wrote Frances Gonzales more than 60 years ago to Mission co-founder, Beulah Bulkley.
This poverty-stricken little girl from Kansas City’s West Side spent many summers as a camper at Camp CUMCITO, grounding herself in God’s Word. And with the help of Mrs. Bulkley, Frances went on to college, graduated and got a job teaching English.
To give back to the Mission she loved so much, Frances later volunteered as a counselor at camp.
Today, it is Frances’ son, Ray Johnson, who shows his thanks for the role the Mission played in his mother’s life by giving financially so other impoverished families might have the opportunity to know the Lord and escape the bonds of poverty.
"My mother found the Lord because of City Union Mission," Ray says. "Every year my wife Diane and I plan to make a donation to the Mission in her honor. I love the work they are doing!"
Thanks, Ray and Diane, for your faithful giving.

Diane Johnson welcomes Ray home from a tour of duty in Iraq.

A Paddler for Kids

When Lynn Lyon learned the Mission needed new canoes for camp, he jumped at the opportunity to bring together two of his passions: kids and paddling.
Owner of Kansas City Paddler, Lynn donated two brand new canoes for our summer camp program. He also offered to our staff his expertise in paddling.
"I am delighted to provide canoes for Camp CUMCITO and provide an opportunity for these children to experience the joy of being connected to nature, as well as experience a sense of confidence and pride as they start to explore new horizons for their lives," Lynn says. "I have a passion for introducing children to paddling as a means of fostering a sense of independence, building confidence and enhancing self esteem."
We are grateful for Lynn’s concern for inner-city youth and his compassion in action!

Many Hands Make Light Work!

A group from Rock Brook Church in Belton, Missouri, put that proverb to the test one Saturday last July. Danny and Dianna Kane, along with several others from their church, joined our clean-up crew to help prepare our campgrounds for the next week of campers.
The guys started cleaning the chapel and cabins and the ladies started doing the laundry, Dianna remembers. Before they knew it, they were done!
Laundering sheets and sweeping floors may not be on your top 10 list, but Dianna says it’s a great opportunity to serve others. Any time Christians work together, you grow closer. It’s fun! And you’re doing something in service of another by helping kids who don’t have the luxuries many of us have."
Do you have a few hours to spare? Check out our one-day camp volunteer opportunities, then call Pat at (816) 474-9380, ext. 1487 to get started.

They've Touched Our City

April 17, approximately 600 compassionate women joined together at our premier Women Who’ve Changed the Heart of the City benefit luncheon at Starlight Theatre. Thanks to their generosity and that of other City Union Mission friends, more than $300,000 was raised!
Funds from this first annual event will be used to complete much-needed renovations at our campgrounds in Warsaw, Missouri, where each summer hundreds of homeless and impoverished children escape the grind of their daily lives and experience God’s unconditional love.
During the luncheon event, we had the privilege of recognizing women whose vision and work have influenced generations and helped shape the heart of Kansas City, including the Mission’s co-founder, the late Beaulah Bulkley.
