What is a Web Banquet?

A web banquet is a unique way to share what is happening at City Union Mission without the escalating costs of hosting a banquet at an area hotel. We want to be able to use all the resources God provides to the fullest. All week, from September 18th through the 22nd, you will be able to join us, either by calling (816) 222-5091, or by coming to the website for banquet highlights.

We will still be sharing with you the same quality content as in past years, including testimonies, ministry updates, and award recipients, but without the added expense of renting a location, and the associated speaker and audiovisual costs.

The web banquet allows us to present even more information to you! All you need to do is click on what you are interested in for the day. It's a new way for you and your friends to provide hope to Kansas City's poor and homeless without additional unnecessary expense. We hope you enjoy participating in our online banquet!

If you would like to continue on to the regular web page, click here or on the Main Site navigation to the left.

Luke 14:12-14

And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment. But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

A message from Dan Doty

Welcome to City Union Mission’s first banquet for the homeless, Celebrate Hope: Giving hands Give Hope!

I hope this inaugural experience will invigorate your heart as you discover how your City Union Mission serves the poor and homeless in Kansas City. There’s so much more going on here than first meets the eye. We want to always be mindful as to how we allocate resources.

Feeding homeless men, women, and children is just one of the things we do in putting the pieces back together. As a Christian ministry, we recognize that the greatest need for any human being is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That is what brings true and lasting change. Each one who walks through our doors is a unique person created by God, with a name, a story, and with their very own set of unique needs.

Matthew 10:29-31, "Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear, you are of more value than many sparrows."

The value our Lord Jesus places upon each person is extreme, demonstrated by His loving concern that all legitimate needs are met. God has called City Union Mission to do just that. We address the needs of the whole person: the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual.

This last year we saw many lives changed dramatically. Clients formed sustaining relationships with the Lord. Families were reunited. Men and women overcame their addictions, learning essential new life skills, and moving on to lead productive lives. Our graduations can be quite emotional for both clients and staff. Eternal bonds are created when you get to be part of changing people’s lives. This year we were part of almost 20 exciting graduations.

We’re always looking for ways to make the most out of the resources God has given us. So the first of August we opened up our third 2nd Chance Thrift Store. This third location will allow us to better serve both our clients, and the community at large.

With so many good things happening I still must say the need for more room in our shelters, and for our programs, continues to grow. The result is an overcrowding in the shelters that causes stress for both guests and staff. We don’t ever want to have to turn anyone away. But the reality is we are running out of space. I am concerned for the man or woman who is told he or she must wait to get into a program. The truth is most won’t wait.

That’s why City Union Mission began a capital campaign, "Building the Walls That Rebuild Lives." It’s focus is on meeting this increased demand for services. And it’s another way you can partner with us.

Over the years I’ve witnessed the transformation of people in need. Some of them have been poor and homeless, and some of them have been our donors and staffers. When you invest in a life transformation is bound to happen. I hope as you experience this online banquet you’ll be encouraged and strengthened. See how much we can accomplish working together for God’s glory, serving those in need.

Sincerely

Rev. Daniel J. Doty
Executive Director

State of the Mission

Welcome to our Celebration of Hope Banquet.

In Job, chapter 5, we read that the helpless have hope because God saves them. City Union Mission is privileged, as an extension of the church, to witness the power of God in giving the helpless hope each day. We get to be part of the process that God uses to change people’s lives. Our hope comes from seeing God’s steadfast hand upon this process.

As we look forward to the future we continue to rely upon God's faithfulness to provide for hopeless people.

The challenges ahead are real ones. Every year there is more need for our services. But they are also opportunities for us to see how God will stretch and grow us as an organization. To face what lies a head requires faith, hard work, and prayer and finances. Thanks to your generosity, City Union Mission has effectively provided this hope for 82 years. Please consider how you can further partner with City Union Mission by financially supporting the work for the poor and homeless in Kansas City.

Bruce Ladd
President of the Board of City Union Mission

Ways People Give

College Graduate Foregoes Gifts

A recent college graduate, Crystal Lazar, selflessly chose to celebrate her graduation by doing something for the poor and homeless. Crystal requested family and friends to bring towels, in lieu of graduation gifts, as she graciously decided to collect towels to benefit children going to Camp CUMCITO this summer.

Davis Family Dental Makes Clean Teeth

Dr. Davis, family dentist, used his dental skills to help the poor and homeless in Kansas City. On September 9th, he donated cleanings for 15 children from City Union Mission’s Family Center.

Along with clean teeth, each child was presented with a hooded Chief’s sweatshirt!
