On Saturday, November 14th the First Baptist Church of Dearborn's Youth group put on "High School for the Homeless". Inspired by 4 High School Students who visited City Union Mission last month. The group was made up of High School Students, middle school students, parents, grandparents, church members & church leadership. The students set up camp behind the church using cardboard boxes. Their Pastor was there to support them as well as Jim and Peggy Dijarnett Christian Motorcycle Association area reps for North East Kansas. After having a meal and learning more about City Union Mission, students set out in four teams to go house to house with shopping carts donated from a local grocer and collected food, clothing even money from neighbors to help the homeless. During the collection, students met an elderly man who greeted them at his door and informed him he was on the brink of becoming homeless and that he had nothing to give as he was struggling himself. After the teens reconvened, they decided they should do something about his situation. So they filled a box with assorted foods just collected and took it back to bless him. The following morning, the students made him a hot plate of breakfast and delivered it to him.
The students also split up into two teams on Saturday night and did a silent prayer walk on behalf of all of the homeless in our city. They met up at a nearby park and discussed what they experienced. Unknown to the students, the leaders remained in the background while they were walking and were discarding packaged snacks along the route they took. On the way back students were instructed to look for the snacks which would be for them to eat during the evening. The group also did some role playing which was a huge success. After a time of role playing the students sat in the sanctuary and discussed how we expect life to end up for us but most of the time it doesn't play out the way we envision so we need to take car of others as God called us to do" per Stephanie Hensley, The students collected a total of 40 bags of clothes, monetary donations and several canned goods.
