At 9 a.m. on Friday, March 20th City Union Mission will unveil the mural local artist, Alexander Austin, created in the multi-purpose room of their new Christian Life Center. It is titled, “Journey of Hope.”

“The mural depicts men going through the progression of struggle and pain to victory as the pieces of their lives are put back together. We wanted it displayed on this wall of the multi-purpose room to inspire and encourage the men on our Christian Life long-term recovery program,” said Dennis Chapman. “Alexander is an inspiration. Almost twenty years ago he, now a Lee’s Summit resident, stayed at City Union Mission during a difficult period in his life. He got help to turn his life around and now is using his God given talent to inspire other men,” said Dennis Chapman.
“This is kind of a homecoming for me to come back to City Union Mission. The wall is perfect. On one end I’ve painted men defeated, weighted down with the stresses of poverty…on the other end men victorious, heads held high, sure.”
Austin completed a huge project painting the Power & Light District's 18,000-square-foot south wall. He has donated his time and creative skill, only accepting funds for his supplies. Alexander explains, “This mural, “Journey of Hope,” means so much more to me then what I might have received in way of compensation because of what it represents.”
“The generosity of the people of Kansas City is what enables us to help poor or homeless men, women, and children, make lasting changes in their lives,” said Dan Doty, Executive Director of the mission.
