City Union Mission's Inaugural Event Huge Success!
April 18, 2008

Beulah Bulkley, Anita Gorman, Shirley Helzberg, Mamie Hughes, Carol Marinovich, Jeannette Nichols were honored Thursday, April 17th, at City Union Mission’s first annual Women Who’ve Changed The Heart Of The City.” This year’s benefit was a sold out luncheon on the stage of the Starlight Theatre.

Funds raised from this first annual event will be used to complete critical renovations to Camp CUMCITO (City Union Mission’s Camp in the Ozarks) in Warsaw, Missouri, where each summer up to 500 homeless or impoverished inner city children escape the grind of their daily lives and experience God’s unconditional love.

The renovations to the camp are part of City Union Mission’s Capital Campaign,” Building the Walls that Rebuild Lives.” The project includes a new facility for their long-term recovery program raising the number of men from 50 to 100, and renovations to the Mission’s existing men’s shelter doubling capacity there to 300. It is only the second time in 84 years they have asked the community for capital funding.

Dan Doty, Executive Director, “Beth McCown, Event Chair Woman, and her committee women, Jennifer Furla, Lisa Sewalson, Jane Shelley, and Betsy Stewart worked tirelessly to ensure the event would be honoring to God, City Union Mission, and this first group of remarkable women who’ve changed the heart of our city. The mission of rescuing, restoring and reaching out to the lost and hurting, belongs to us all. We’re so grateful to have been able to tell more of our community more about who we are and what we do.”

Funding for the Capital Campaign has included gifts from corporations, private foundations, and individuals. “There is still $2.8 million to raise. Even though the "Women Who’ve Changed The Heart Of The City” event is over you can still honor these remarkable women,“ said Dennis Chapman, Associate Executive Director of Development, by helping us reach the finish line for this campaign.” To find out about giving options, or to arrange a gift, please contact Dennis Chapman at (816) 329-1476 or click here.
