Another God Day!
April 15, 2008

Peggy Ramsey, Camp Assistant, loves kids.  That’s why she works tirelessly all year to help prepare for the camp season.  “It’s what God has called me to do.” Those who work with her are awed by what appears to be her endless energy.  She credits all to God.

“It never ceases to amaze me how God fills every one of our ministry needs.  All He asks is for us to seek Him and lay out our requests.  Monday morning, April 14, was one of those times when He showed me once again just how faithful He is.  I walked into my office without an inkling of all the wonderful surprises God had in store for me.”

“It started with a phone message left over the weekend by a former camper, who is now 16.  Camp had meant so much to her that she wants to come back to serve at camp this summer.  I was thrilled!  As I was speaking to her, I continued to check my emails from the weekend and saw one from a board member who was working to get some handheld GPS systems for a camp activity from a friend he knew at Garmin.  The email said that it was a done deal.”

“Then a few minutes later, when I picked up my mail, I had an envelope from a church I had spoken to a couple of weeks earlier.  There had only been 5 youths and the leader at the presentation, and I had driven 60 miles round trip to do.  I hadn’t counted on a lot happening, but in the envelope were applications for 4 of the youth to work for 1 to 2 weeks at camp this summer!”

“While I was still looking through these applications, I received an email from Shawna Ketter, our Corporate Relations Specialist, stating that a donor had seen a ‘needs’ list and wanted to donate money to purchase over $1475 of our camp supplies.”

“Before I was able to complete updating the web site to reflect this donation, the phone rang.  It was from the lady at the offices of the KC public schools.  She told me that our camp flier had final approval to be passed out in the schools this year to recruit campers.  I had started this project last year!”

“But God wasn’t through yet!  I had asked fellow employees who attend any of the local neighborhood meetings if they could find out how we could get the word out about camp.  Right after lunch, I received an email from Rick Murphy, Manager of one of our Second Chance Thrift stores, that the Chamber had agree to include a flier in the mail-out they were sending the next day, if we could get them to her.”

“And the morning’s not over yet!”

Camp CUMCITO is City Union Mission’s Camp in the Ozarks, located in Warsaw, MO.  Each summer up to 500 low-income or homeless children, from ages 4 to 16, are served. Most of the children who attend are from the urban core and are in need of love, encouragement and consistent discipline from compassionate adults.  If you would like to learn more about Camp CUMCITO, please click here.

There are still plenty of camp opportunities.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here.
