(KC, MO. July 2007) City Union Mission was recently awarded a $500,000 Affordable Housing Assistance Program Grant by the Federal Home Loan Bank to assist in their capital campaign. It is to be administered by the Missouri Housing Development Commission. CommunityAmerica was the sponsoring agency.
Every week dozens of homeless men ask to join the mission’s 12 to 14 month long-term recovery program, but there is no room. To address this need the Capital Campaign began in 2006. The project includes a new 30,000 sq-ft-facility that will double capacity to 100 men in the current long-term recovery program, renovations to the Mission’s existing men’s shelter doubling capacity there to 300, and necessary renovations to the agency’s Family Center and Camp CUMCITO, located in Warsaw, MO. It is only the second time in 83 years City Union Mission has asked the community for capital funding.
“Building the Walls that Rebuild Lives,” is based on the book of Nehemiah in the Bible where families came together to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem out of “burnt rubble and stone,” each taking a section of the wall as their own. Caring donors can partner with the Mission so that more lives can be rebuilt in much the same way. “Rebuilding lives is what we do at City Union Mission,” explained City Union Mission Executive Director Dan Doty.
Funding for the project has included gifts from corporations, private foundations, and individuals. To find out about your giving options, or to arrange a gift, please contact Dennis Chapman at (816) 329-1476 or click here. |
