Live 2 Give Kids Make a Difference
Compassion in Action
After learning about people who had made a difference in society, students in the gifted education program at Lillian Schumacher Elementary School in Liberty decided it was their turn to be a positive force in the community. The 4th and 5th graders formed the Live 2 Give club with the goal of helping homeless children.
During their service project, the kids focused on educating their community about homelessness, advocating for homeless children and participating in some of City Union Mission’s drives to collect supplies and funds. In addition to researching the causes of homelessness, the students created a presentation for faculty. They worked with parents to raise money for the Mission. And as part of our Scavenger Hunt drive, they canvassed the neighborhood around the school to collect toilet paper for our shelters.
All told, the students gathered approximately 1,600 hygiene items, 232 rolls of toilet paper and $285 they raised selling soda and candy bars during parent/teacher conferences.
When I read their reflections at the end of the year, the majority wrote that they now realize they can make a difference, says Michele Peck, PEAK teacher at Schumacher Elementary, who worked with the students throughout the campaign.
