The Word

One Camper's Love Lives On

"It was under this big tree that I learned about Jesus and received Him as my Savior my first year at camp," wrote Frances Gonzales more than 60 years ago to Mission co-founder, Beulah Bulkley.

This poverty-stricken little girl from Kansas City’s West Side spent many summers as a camper at Camp CUMCITO, grounding herself in God’s Word. And with the help of Mrs. Bulkley, Frances went on to college, graduated and got a job teaching English.

To give back to the Mission she loved so much, Frances later volunteered as a counselor at camp.

Today, it is Frances’ son, Ray Johnson, who shows his thanks for the role the Mission played in his mother’s life by giving financially so other impoverished families might have the opportunity to know the Lord and escape the bonds of poverty.

"My mother found the Lord because of City Union Mission," Ray says. "Every year my wife Diane and I plan to make a donation to the Mission in her honor. I love the work they are doing!"

Thanks, Ray and Diane, for your faithful giving.

Diane Johnson welcomes Ray home from a tour of duty in Iraq.
