Christ in My Heart
Three years ago, Clara Moore walked through the doors of City Union Mission’s Family Center for the first time. After years spent battling alcohol addiction, she was ready to start her life over.
“How can I tell my daughters and granddaughters right from wrong if I’m not living right,” she remembers thinking. “Today, it is truly a blessing to wake up in the morning. Every day I pray, ‘Dear God, please don’t allow me to stumble and keep the devil off my back!’”
The road to recovery was not easy for Clara; following the rules and doing her required assignments were a struggle at first. It took humbling herself before she could allow our staff and the Lord to reshape her life.
Then, just two months after joining our long-term New Life Recovery Program, Clara faced another challenge: breast cancer. During months of chemotherapy and radiation, our staff and residents stood by Clara’s side—praying for her, supporting her and loving her.
“If I’d not come (to the Mission), I would have been drunk saying, ‘Why me?’ she says of her fight to survive. “The program saved my life in more ways than one.”
After graduating the New Life Recovery Program, Clara got a job at one of our 2nd Chance Thrift stores. “I’m grateful and humble. I just sit down on my bed and cry. I look at my apartment, my job, my car ... and I just thank God. He brought me a long way!”
Because of friends like you, Clara will celebrate this Christmas with Christ in her heart. “I learned how to pray better and to apply Scriptures to my life,” she says. “Everything that happens to you is right there in the Bible.”
