The Word

Shining the Light and Love of Christ

Jeff Moore can’t let somebody cross his path and not tell them about the Lord and what He’s done in his life! From a car thief, liar, cocaine addict - a man who didn’t care about anybody or anything - to a Kindergarten Sunday school teacher, God’s love brings redemption!

“He took me out of the pits of hell,” Jeff says. “He brought me to City Union Mission’s Opportunity Farm to be still long enough to listen to His Word.”

At 14, Jeff started drinking with his friends. “Just kids stuff,” he remembers thinking. By the time he was 21, he was a full-blown alcoholic and drug user. His addiction would engulf the next 20 years of his life, costing him two marriages and his children.

Finally, after living in his car for a while, Jeff began feeling God pull at his heart, and he started going to church. There he met one of our counselors at Opportunity Farm, an extension of our Christian Life Program (CLP) in Warsaw, Missouri.

“At Opportunity Farm there are men who have been serving God for a long time. They are sold out to the Lord and they’ll tell you the truth. That’s what drug addicts and alcoholics need—the truth. That’s what changes lives.”

Jeff joined the CLP and learned about accountability, responsibility, perseverance and how to live a stable, drug-free life built on the foundation of God’s Word.

“If City Union Mission was just raised up so Jeff Moore could come to Christ, praise God,” he smiles. “If nobody else gets it, I got it!”

Jeff graduated the CLP and now works for a Christian construction company. He continues to spend time ministering to men on the long-term recovery program. “I tell them to read their Bible. Get fed on God’s Word; learn to pray; learn to read. That’s what changed me.”

God’s love is almost tangible in Jeff’s voice and his face. He is sincerely grateful to the Mission staff and those who support us. “Everybody that supports the Mission had a part in my life. If they wouldn’t have been there, the bunkhouse wouldn’t have been there and the bed wouldn’t have been there ... the food ... the counselor. They all had a part in my life.”

“Opportunity Farm is there so men like me can come and find out about Christ,” he continues. “God is sufficient for all I need.”
