A Chance to Be a Kid

Growing up in Kansas City’s inner-city neighborhoods can be tough. Kids are exposed to drugs, violence, extreme poverty and neglect very early in life. When most boys and girls are playing with dolls and action figures or riding their bikes and shooting hoops, these boys and girls are learning to fend for themselves; they are learning to care for their siblings and sometimes even their parents.

Every day at City Union Mission, we see the devastating results of kids being forced to grow up too soon. Some kids become rebellious, while others withdraw as their world becomes too painful to bear. Their schoolwork deteriorates; they develop street toughness that leads to violence and drugs. They continue the very cycle of neglect, abuse and poverty that squelched their own potential.

This summer at City Union Mission’s Camp In The Ozarks (CUMCITO), our caring staff and volunteers will provide homeless and impoverished kids a chance to feel safe … a chance to heal … a chance to find hope … a chance to be exactly what they are—kids!
You have a chance to be a part of this life-changing experience! Please don’t miss it. Read on for details.
