A Vision for the Future
City Union Mission founder Rev. David Bulkey called his desire to care for the poor "a terrible compulsion from God." Eighty-three years later, our staff faithfully continues Rev. and Mrs. Beulah Bulkey’s commitment to help society’s outcasts find real help, healing and hope through comprehensive emergency services and innovative, biblically sound recovery programs.
Today, our Building the Walls that Rebuild Lives campaign heralds our vision for the future. Recognizing the journey from homelessness to independent living does not happen overnight, we are committed to providing our long-term recovery programs to every individual or family who is ready for lasting change.
Funds from the Building the Walls that Rebuild Lives campaign will be used to renovate our Men’s Shelter, more than doubling our emergency beds, and to construct a new facility to house our Christian Life Program. The 35,000-square-foot Christian Life Program building will allow 100 men to participate in this life-changing program. We’ll also renovate and update restrooms and classroom space at the Family Center.
God does not call ministries to grow for the sake of growth; rather, He calls us to be effective in ministry to the poor. Expanding our programs is absolutely necessary to meet the needs of the homeless in Kansas City and to show them they are valuable in God’s eyes and in ours.
We do not accept government or United Way funds that compromise our Christ-centered mission. Instead, we rely solely and completely on the generous financial support we receive from individuals, businesses, churches and foundations to meet our daily provisions. You are a vital part of this ministry.
