Empty Bowls Fill the Homeless

On February 5th*, caring folks will fill Shawnee Mission West High School to help the homeless during the second annual Empty Bowls event to benefit City Union Mission. The Shawnee Mission School District, Panera Bread Co. and the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation developed the idea for Empty Bowls last year to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness in Kansas City.

At last year’s event, 1,400 students created ceramic bowls, which were sold during the soup supper and silent auction.  The event, which raised about $10,000 for the Mission, was such a success, organizers decided to hold it every year.

"Anytime you can teach kids to be more aware of the world around them, meet some of the curriculum goals of the school district and send a check for nearly $10,000 to a great organization like City Union Mission, you’ve got to look at building on that success and involving even more students next year," says Empty Bowls event organizer Rosie Riordan, Shawnee Mission visual arts resource specialist.

Can your organization host an event to benefit City Union Mission?  For more information, contact Ben at (816) 474-9380, ext. 1459 or drives@cumission.org. Or, click here to learn how you can participate in our drives and events to help the homeless and hungry served by the Mission.
