Compassion in Action - Mark Sewalson

Businessman’s Life Changed at Camp

When the youth pastor at Mark Sewalson’s church asked Mark if he thought it was a good idea to send the church youth to serve at Camp CUMCITO last summer, Mark answered with an resounding "Yes!" Mark, a member of the board of directors for City Union Mission, loved the idea so much, he decided to join his church’s team as a counselor in a cabin full of 9- and 10-year-old boys.

"We spend all this money to send our kids far away so they can have a heart for missions, when there is this need right here," says Mark, a partner with Anderson & Sewalson Investment Consulting.

As he anticipated, the week was packed with joys and challenges. "When I got down there with the kids, it just killed me. They had such little hope," Mark recounts. One boy was a chronic bed-wetter who covered up his embarrassment by bullying the other kids. "He came from a tough situation," Mark confides.

Mark was overjoyed when one boy in his cabin accepted Christ as his savior.

"I really felt a connection to these kids, like they were my own," Mark says, looking back. "One week at camp gives them hope. It can help prevent kids from having problems in their future."
