High-Impact Volunteer Service Opportunities
Volunteers at City Union Mission are integral partners with the Mission staff to help further the Kingdom work of Jesus Christ. A High-Impact Volunteer at City Union Mission is someone who has:
- Sensed God’s Calling to use their God-given gifts, skills and talents to serve the poor and homeless of Kansas City.
- Sensed God’s leading to Partner with City Union Mission to fulfill the Great Commandment of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and making disciples.
- Made a 6 to 12 month Commitment to regularly serve on a weekly or monthly basis in a volunteer capacity that expresses their gifts, talents and passions.

Office Assistant - Volunteer Department -
Partner with Volunteer Department staff in the development of a vital volunteer ministry. Help bring effciency and organization to recruitment, application processing, record keeping and communication with Mission volunteers. Tasks related to MS Word, Excel, data entry, filing, phone and email communication, webpage updates and enhancements, digital photography.
Gospel Presenter/Interviewer -
Do you enjoy opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus Christ?!! Volunteers in this role give a one-on-one presentation of the Gospel to adults who have qualified with Community Assistance to receive school supplies for their children. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and able to communicate a simple, clear presentation of the Gospel. Brief orientation/training is provided. Volunteers are asked to serve at least two different days, minimum of 2 hours at a time. School Supplies qualifying runs weekdays from late July through the end of August, generally from 10-4 each day.
Office Assistant - Christian Life Program -
Assisting CLP Asst. Administrator with word processing, filing, data entry and general office duties to better facilitate efficient ministry recordkeeping, communication, scheduling and programming.
Learning Center Academic Assistant -
Assist men in our Men's Center with the academic/ career skills necessary for them to contribute to society and to the Christian community. Administer academic assessments, monitor classroom of computer stations, answer questions, possible tutoring. Must be male. (Mon-Thur, 2-4 p.m. or 5-7 p.m.)
Assist women and/or men in our Family Center as they go through computer programs to improve academic skills. Must be female. (Mon-Fri, 1-4 p.m.)
Camp CUMCITO Health Screenings -
We need medical students, doctors and nurses to perform health screenings for our campers before each camp session. If you are available on Saturdays from 8 am to 2:00 p.m. , please assist us with getting our kids ready for camp. No certification is required.
Fitness and Nutrition Instructor -
Man needed to train men in nutrition and physical fitness, promoting healthy lifestyle disciplines and choices. Provide fitness and nutrition instruction, developing a health plan and program, implementation and oversight of program.
Office Assistant - Development -
Assist the Development Administrative Assistant in roles and tasks to increase the amount of service that can be provided to the Development Team.
6-12 months, 4-8 hours/week minimum.
Computer skills, willing to learn, detail oriented
Update website, assemble award plaques, prepare materials for speaking engagements, update contact information for media contacts, data entry, sending reminders
Community Assistance Processor - Thrift Store -
Represent Jesus Christ to Community Assistance clients by enabling low-income individuals to acquire clothing and necessary items at no cost or minimal cost. Lead Community Assistance clients through the process of using their certificates to obtain clothing, furniture or house wares.
Office Assistant - Men's Shelter -
To have a part in meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of men in the Men's Center by assisting in related administrative duties.
Administrative filing, word processing, data entry and general office tasks.
Morning or afternoon, to be coordinated with the volunteer and the Administrative Assistant.
Must have organizational skills and experience, maintain confidentialities, works independently, email/electronic communications, database experience - preferably Excel, flexibility
About Bret Kroh - Your High-Impact Volunteer Administrator
Bret Kroh joined the Development Team in May 2007 as the High-Impact Volunteer Administrator. He has spent 24 years in education and ministry, 11 years as youth pastor and five as an Associate pastor working with small groups and volunteers. He and his wife, Diane, live in Gardner, Kansas and have two grown children.
Bret says, “I’m excited by the challenge of expanding the development and training for High-Impact Lead Volunteers. I’m even more excited about working with these volunteers as partners in ministry.”
